The commission
A poem written by an ancestor of the artist was translated into pitched sound material through recurrent neural networks. That material arrived raw: shapeless fragments. The work was compositional —selection, editing, structure— until it became a complete piece, recorded and mastered onto a 78 rpm shellac disc that plays on an RCA Victor gramophone inside the installation.
